How to prepare for the Football Academy - Top tips from the Head Coach
Are you joining this summer’s Football Academy at Lord Wandsworth College?
Last week, we recommended 8 things to pack before English Study Camps and this week we have asked our Head Coach, Stewart Brown, to give you some advice on how to prepare for the Football Academy so you can arrive ready.
As you gear up for this summer programme, it's essential to be well-prepared physically, mentally, and practically. Here are some valuable tips and advice from Stewart to help you get ready.
Before Arrival
1. Build Your Stamina
The Head Coach emphasises the importance of endurance. You should be able to run continuously for at least 10 minutes at any speed. Incorporate regular cardio workouts such as jogging, cycling, or swimming into your routine to build your stamina and cardiovascular fitness.
2. Essential Gear: Shin pads and Boots
Don’t forget your equipment! The Head Coach insists on bringing at least two sets of shin pads to each session. This ensures you have a backup in case one set gets damaged or lost. Additionally, you'll need the appropriate footwear: boots for grass surfaces and trainers for indoor or artificial pitches.
3. Optional but Beneficial: GPS Vests
If you have your own GPS vest, feel free to bring it. These vests can provide valuable data on your performance, helping you and your coaches track metrics like distance covered, speed, and heart rate.
During the Football Academy
1. Maintain a Sports-Related Diet
Nutrition is a crucial part of any athlete's regimen. A balanced diet rich in protein, healthy fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals will fuel your body for intense training sessions. Ensure your meals are well-rounded, including lean meats, fish, eggs, nuts, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Staying hydrated is equally important, so drink plenty of water throughout the day.
2. Prioritise Sleep
Adequate rest is essential for recovery and performance. Aim for at least 8 hours of quality sleep each night. Proper sleep helps your body repair muscles, consolidate memory, and rejuvenate for the next day’s activities.
3. Language and Learning Resources
Football is a global game, and communicating clearly can be a significant advantage. Everyone is coming to English Study Camps to improve their English along with their football skills, so if necessary, carry a translation book related to sports and football-specific terminology. This can help you communicate better with international teammates and coaches.
4. Educational Reading: Autobiographies
Learning from the experiences of successful players who have overcome challenges can be incredibly motivating. Bring along an autobiography of a football player who has faced and conquered adversity. Their stories can provide insights and inspiration as you navigate your own path.
5. Motivational Music
Music can be a powerful tool to boost your motivation and focus. Create a playlist of your favourite motivational songs to listen to before training or matches. This can help you get in the right mindset and elevate your performance.
Preparing for the Football Academy at Lord Wandsworth College requires you to look at different areas such as physical training, proper nutrition, mental preparedness, and practical readiness. By following these tips from the Head Coach, Stewart, you'll be well on your way to making a strong impression and maximising your potential at the academy.
Remember that dedication and hard work are the keys to success!
We look forward to welcoming you to the English Study Camps Football Academy this summer!

8 things to pack before English Study Camps
What you should pack for your English course in the UK.
A handy guide for when you come to English Study Camps by Wimbledon School of English.
Your flights are booked, your English programme awaits and it’s time to pack your bags!
If you're coming to the UK with English Study Camps by WSE, we want to make sure you have everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable stay. From essential clothing and toiletries to important documents and study materials, we've compiled this brief list to ensure you have the most important things before you travel. Get ready to explore the UK with confidence and make the most of your language learning journey.
So, let's dive in and discover the best things to pack for your upcoming adventure!
Here's our 8 things to pack to ensure you have everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable stay.
1.Suitable clothing: The weather in the UK can be unpredictable at the best of times. It can go from sunshine to thunder storm in a short space of time, so it's best to pack layers. Bring a mix of t-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, and a light jacket or raincoat.
2. Footwear: Don't forget to pack comfortable shoes for walking and any specific sports or activity shoes you may need. If you are doing the Football Academy or Football Skills at Lord Wandsworth College, don’t forget your football boots!
3. Toiletries: While some basic toiletries will be available at the accommodation, it's always a good idea to bring your own. Pack essentials like toothbrush, toothpaste, suncream and any other personal hygiene items you require. Don't forget to include any medications you may need.
4. Electronics: If you plan to bring electronics, such as a laptop, tablet, or smartphone, remember to pack the necessary chargers and a UK adapter. The UK uses a different electrical outlet standard than some other countries, so it's important to have the right adapters to keep your devices powered up.
5. Power bank: Because of the many activities and excursions you will do, it is important to stay connected throughout the day. Having a power bank will make sure your phone stays charged and you can capture the memories and send pictures to your friends and family back home.
6. Documents and Money: Make sure to bring your passport, student visa (if applicable), and any other important documents. It's also a good idea to carry a copy of your travel insurance and emergency contact information. There will be opportunities to go shopping on your study trip, so don't forget to exchange some currency to British pounds or have a bank card that works abroad so that you can buy souvenirs.
7. Backpack or Day Bag: A sturdy backpack or day bag will come in handy for carrying your belongings during your outings and excursions. Make sure it's spacious enough to hold your essentials like water bottle, snacks, camera, and any other items you may need throughout the day.
8. Entertainment: There is no shortage of entertainment at English Study Camps but don't forget to bring some entertainment options for your own free time to help you relax. This could include books, magazines, a tablet, or any other items that you enjoy during leisure hours.
Before you travel, we will also email you a useful pre-arrival guide so you can check for any other items we recommend bringing. It's always a good idea to pack light and prioritise the essentials while keeping in mind the duration of your stay and the activities you'll be participating in.
Remember, English Study Camps offers a variety of activities and excursions, so pack accordingly for both indoor and outdoor adventures. For most sports you just need suitable clothes. Tennis rackets and other gear is provided unless you have a favourite tennis racket you want to bring with you. But most importantly, come with an open mind, ready to learn and have a fantastic experience in the UK!

We are delighted to introduce our newest team member, Stewart Brown, who will be joining us as Head Coach for our Football Academy at Lord Wandsworth College. Stewart brings with him a wealth of experience and a proven track record in nurturing young talent, which we are confident will greatly benefit our academy and its players.
Stewart's coaching journey commenced in 1994 when he managed a grassroots men's amateur team in Stockport, Greater Manchester. Despite not having a background as a professional player, he embarked on the coach education pathway, earning qualifications such as the UEFA A Licence Coach, FA Youth Award, and Level 2 Talent ID. He firmly believes that this pathway has enriched his coaching abilities, and we are fortunate to have someone with such dedication and expertise joining our team.
Over the past twenty-eight years, Stewart has been actively involved in coaching and developing players. His most recent roles include working with Manchester United as a development coach, focusing on youth development within the soccer schools programme and Foundation. Additionally, he has been contributing to the development of players at Rochdale AFC within the Community Trust and Academy.
Stewart's experience extends beyond his current roles, having worked with various prestigious clubs such as Southampton FC Academy, Barnet FC Academy, Accrington Stanley Academy, Burnley FC Academy, Macclesfield Town FC, and Manchester City Ladies U18s. Notably, he has had the privilege of working with outstanding talents like Dwight McNeil, who is currently excelling at Everton, and Ethan Nwaneri, who made history as the youngest ever Premier League debutant last season while at Arsenal.
Moreover, Stewart has been instrumental in player development through his involvement with three player recruitment companies: Pro11, SpottedBy, and The PFSA (Professional Football Scouts Association).
As former coach in the English Premier League, we are confident that Stewart's expertise and passion for nurturing young talents will significantly enhance our Football Academy and elevate the skills of our players.

James’ experience working as a House Parent
It was the tricks and tips of boarding behaviour management and successful safeguarding that I picked up at WSE that have made me the successful pastoral practitioner that I am today!
James worked as a House Parent in the boys boarding house at Lord Wandsworth College. In this blog, he reflects on his experience working with English Study Camps in Hampshire.
After graduating in 2017, I joined the WSE Summer school in 2018 at Lord Wandsworth College as their boys House Parent for their boarding accommodation, after some time in a boarding school as an RA. Though not totally inexperienced when I joined, I was still young.
It was my first time managing a team within a boarding house and many of the responsibilities were new to me, having few international students in my state school position.
My time working with Paul that Summer cemented my passion for the role that I had been unsure about for the past year and led me to pursue a career in boarding. Being in a state boarding school the previous year, and having recently moved to an independent boarding school for the months leading up to camp, I was still relatively fresh into safeguarding and education and it was my experience leading the boarding house for the first time independently, combined with the invaluable guidance from Paul, his trust he displayed in me, and his willingness to share his experience, that made my decision to continue in International Boarding after camp that year.
Having the freedom to run the house my way, but always knowing I was trusted and supported, made camp a wonderful place to be as a young boarding staff member and, though I never did return for camp in the Summer, I would spend the following five years as a House Parent in a prestigious international boarding school before being promoted to Deputy Head of House for the end of the last academic year, and beginning this one. Whilst I’ve learned much these past years, it was the tricks and tips of boarding behaviour management and successful safeguarding that I picked up at WSE that have made me the successful pastoral practitioner that I am today!
The top three things about camp that year for me were:
The facilities! Having use of the squash courts, badminton courts, and astro turf were fantastic!
The comradery! Though a friend from home was present at the camp, I made many new friends from across the boarding, teaching, management, and the activity leaders of the camp that year, some of whom I stay regularly in contact with!
The freedom of creativity. The systems by which I ran that boarding house and the positive effects and changes we saw in those young people that year stay with me and I often recall them as some of my great successes in boarding, and this would not have been possible without the empathetic leadership and their enthusiasm to nurture the ability of their employees.

My experience working as a House Parent
It could be hilarious good fun as well. The unpredictable nature of working with kids means that you can’t stress too much. As long as everyone is safe and happy, sometimes you have to laugh off the occasional thing that doesn’t go to plan.
Mary worked as House Parent at Lord Wandsworth College. In this blog, she reflects on her experience working with English Study Camps in Hampshire.
How was your experience over the summer?
Busy! It was definitely a time of “be ready for anything” because you never knew what would come your way. It’s also very eye opening. There aren’t many places where you can integrate with so many nationalities in the UK for four weeks. I definitely found myself picking up new facts and words from places I had never been to.
What would you wish you would have known before starting work?
It could be hilarious good fun as well. The unpredictable nature of working with kids means that you can’t stress too much. As long as everyone is safe and happy, sometimes you have to laugh off the occasional thing that doesn’t go to plan.
How was your experience working with international students?
Rewarding. It definitely teaches you to be as patient as possible. If it takes them a while to explain something in English then it doesn’t matter if it makes you or them late for an activity. The fact they are trying to communicate in English is what matters, it’s why they’re there!
Did you have any experience working with under 18-year-olds prior to the start of the summer?
Yes, I had worked at a language school five years earlier but more recently, I had been a classroom assistant at a school in Spain where I helped students in Years 5 and 6, and also the sixth form. This definitely helped me with confidence especially when I was managing the girls all at once. It meant I could balance being an approachable but respected member of staff.
What are the top three things you enjoyed about the summer?
1. Getting to know the girls in my care. I could have a real laugh with them and also be there for them when they were upset and needed a chat.
2. The staff! I was fortunate enough to work with a very friendly bunch of people, some of whom I’m still in touch with and its great to be able to share some of the fun memories I have of WSE.
3. The grounds. Lord Wandsworth College has both a pretty campus and lovely surrounding areas. As a runner, it was perfect to be able to get out into the peace and quiet so easily with stunning views.
How did this job help you in your career?
It’s definitely helped me with confidence. At the language school you have to get to know staff very quickly especially if you’re managing the staff in your house. It meant that in my new job, I have thrown myself into getting to know my colleagues as quickly as possible which in turn has helped me to settle into my role more.
What advice would you give to staff who are starting with English Study Camps this coming summer?
Bring as much stuff as you can to help you feel at home, be it snacks or extra pillows. It’s very much a boarding school life style even for staff and its not always easy to pop out and get extra supplies!
Also, try to communicate as clearly as possible to the students – we can’t expect a child to automatically know what you mean if its not their native language. If you’re not sure how something is supposed to be run, then they definitely won’t know what’s happening!

Entertainment: There is no shortage of entertainment on English programmes but don't forget to bring some entertainment options for your own free time to help you relax.
